Mental Health Clinician

In partnership with the NYC Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), Sheltering Arms is launching a new program that will serve as an Annex for the Nicholas Scoppetta Children’s Center pre-placement program for children entering the foster care system.  This new Bronx-based short-term, residential program serving young children between the ages of 0 to 12 years old, will be called the Children’s Center Annex.  The Children’s Center Annex will provide a home-like, co-ed, developmentally appropriate setting for younger children, including sibling groups. The Annex will be designed to be warm, colorful, and child-friendly, and staff will be trained in trauma informed practices allowing them to provide a nurturing environment for children entering foster care.  

 

Sheltering Arms is seeking a Mental Health Clinician for our new Reception Children's Center in the Bronx. The Reception Center Mental Health Clinician is responsible for providing and/or overseeing appropriate mental health screenings and assessments for infants, toddlers and children at the Reception Center. They will provide short term intervention aimed to reduce the development of trauma symptoms in infants, toddlers and children during the peri-traumatic period post removal from family of origin. In addition the clinician will work closely with the Program Director and the Program Manager to develop and maintain a trauma informed therapeutic milieu, including trainings for other center staff.  Individual, group, and family sessions will be provided as necessary, utilizing short term trauma informed practices. The clinician will participate as a member of the multi-disciplinary team responsible for making recommendations regarding a child’s placement, reunification or visitation plans. The clinician will provide a link between the team and other mental health providers in preparing for the child’s transition from the Reception Center.

 

Essential Functions

  • Provides mental health services to infants, toddlers and children and their families.
  • Completes, oversees and/or coordinates mental health screenings, assessments and treatment.  
  • Assures coordination of mental health recommendations during the child’s stay at the Reception center and during their transition to other placements
  • Works with Program Director and Manager to develop and maintain a trauma informed care milieu.
  • Provides appropriate formal and informal training for children, families and Reception Center Staff.
  • Models and promotes dependable, responsible, professional and accountable behavior including positive program norms, enthusiasm, and teamwork primacy
  • Available for on-call coverage rotation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • LMSW, LCSW, LMHC or LCAT required
  • Experience in Child Welfare or other relevant mental health system.
  • Experience with young children preferred but not required.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and conduct visits to facilities, homes and community based on partners
