Sheltering Arms is a social services organization with many comprehensive programs whose mission is to strengthen the education, wellbeing, and development of vulnerable children, youth, and families across the New York City metro area. One of the many Sheltering Arms services is to provide care for children in foster care and juvenile detention. The Sheltering Arms Health Services clinic is a centralized medical home that provides and coordinates comprehensive, trauma informed, and evidence based medical, mental health and dental care for all of the children placed in our foster care and juvenile detention.

 

 At Sheltering Arms, the pediatric provider provides comprehensive pediatric care for all of our children and adolescents in foster care, group homes and our juvenile justice programs in our South Bronx clinic.  The pediatric provider provides care within the team of health services staff, including nurses, medical assistants, nurse practitioners, pediatricians, administrative assistants, psychiatrists, mental health therapists, dentists and dental assistants.

 

Essential Functions

  • Provide comprehensive pediatric medical care to children and adolescents served by this clinic for a total of 27 hours a week
  • Interview the Foster Family, Biological Family or designated caseworkers prior to examining each child
  • Relay any special information to the Director of Health Services/ Director of Foster Care/Director Group Home about the physical or emotional health of Sheltering Arms children and adolescents, which may come to his/her attention
  • At his or her discretion may request referral of patients to another Medical Center/ Hospital for further diagnosis or treatment
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary communication with clinic staff and other departments to ensure the wellbeing of our patients
  • Other related task that may be assigned

 

Qualifications

  • A licensed medical doctor or nurse practitioner in New York State. Completion of an accredited Pediatric or Family Practice Residency Program. Board Eligible or Board Certified in specialty.
  • Experience with children and adolescents in Foster Care/Group Home.
  • Knowledge of physical and sexual abuse signs and symptoms. Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in emergency situations, to take initiative appropriately and to function independently when required.
