Marketing Director

Location: New York, NY

Department: Development

Type: Full Time

Min. Experience: Mid Level

We are seeking a Marketing Director to serve as our visionary captain and agent of marketing, branding, and awareness-building efforts. As a member of the Development and Communications team, you won’t just be marketing for the fun of it (though we agree that marketing is fun) – you’ll be marketing with the purpose of accelerating Sheltering Arms’ impact in key NYC communities. You’ll be joining at a time where we are rethinking our brand from end-to-end, and as the Marketing Director you’ll play a key role in bringing the new brand to life in a way that raises organizational awareness and galvanizes donors and volunteers to join our cause.

You’ll do the classic work of a Marketing Director – like building a comprehensive marketing plan, collateral, digital media strategy, and managing our website – and have the freedom necessary to start new, exciting initiatives that accelerate our revenue and organizational growth + sustainability. If you believe that the best marketing appeals to the heart and the mind, and walk, run, and sleep in the shoes of the customer before anything else, then you’ve found a career opportunity here. You’ll report to the Chief Development Officer and work closely with internal and external constituents.

Team Overview

The Development and Communications team at Sheltering Arms fuels the growth and impact of the organization through fundraising, branding, marketing, and volunteer management initiatives. We’re a growing team with a strong belief in life-transforming results for our communities; a healthy balance between our personal and professional lives; and an ongoing desire to innovate, improve, and enjoy the journey. You’re a good fit for our team if you also believe in:

  • Inspiring everyone, all the time, at every moment
  • Giving supporters a stake in the future of our organization
  • The power of word of mouth and advocacy
  • Brands that are based in experiences, conversations, and the customer
  • Taking action and fighting back against the status quo
  • ROI, while being savvy enough to know that Jerry Maguire’s most famous line isn’t always the bottom line

Responsibilities

Campaigns and events:

  • Work with the Development and Communications team to create campaigns, events, and initiatives to assist our donor cultivation, advocacy, and stewardship efforts.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Individual Giving & Campaigns to guide the pre-, during-, and post- “experience” for all of our events, most notably for our annual gala event.
  • Operate as the Head of the Jedi Council for cross-functional marketing efforts, where it’s necessary to motivate people from across the organization to support campaign needs.
  • Identify and shape compelling stories that would motivate stakeholders to take action to support Sheltering Arms.

Digital and social media:

  • Manage our website content and work alongside third parties, wherever appropriate, to create new content.
  • Manage our social media strategy and all posts, likes, tweets, shares, and anything else that would help our cause.

Brand management and communications:

  • Serve as a Brand Ambassador for the organization by ensuring brand adoption across all constituents and redesigning collateral to meet new brand standards.
  • Work with the Chief Development Officer to establish and share messaging for the entire organization for use by the executive team and other externally-facing constituents.
  • Develop new marketing templates (i.e. one pagers, newsletters) for staff use, and as the Brand Ambassador, monitor ongoing brand implementation.
  • Partner with the CDO to launch PR strategies that build awareness of Sheltering Arms’ impact and priorities.

Insights:

  • Research and monitor the impact of the new brand and other organizational campaigns.
  • Research trends (and predict the future, wherever possible) among donors, corporations, communities, and the broader nonprofit landscape.

Organizational impact:

  • Deliver effective marketing tools and strategies to teams across the organization to further their objectives.
  • Work with the CDO to drive advocacy campaigns that positively influence federal, state, and city policies.

Qualifications

  • Dedication and passion for social change, with a clear commitment to our mission of transforming lives for disenfranchised families and communities
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of related experience in marketing and communications
  • Track record of generating new marketing or campaign solutions that raise awareness and generate intent to act; sometimes the solutions are your own innovations, and sometimes you’re smart enough to reapply something that works
  • Inspirational story teller who can blend emotions and numbers to get people to join your cause
  • Demonstrated skill and success in managing complex projects, even when they include multiple stakeholders at the same time
  • Keen knowledge of developing and implementing brand personality across multiple marketing touchpoints
  • Ability to tap networks of probono marketing support is a plus
  • Work experience in organizations that serve low-income communities is a plus
  • Your mornings, afternoons, and evenings involve countless hours of social media and scouring the web to learn more about useful (and sometimes useless) things
  • More than just a team player; you strive to make sure everyone on the team succeeds personally and professionally
  • You thrive in fast paced environments and get bored when things are too slow or too easy
