Outreach Worker, Community Health Program

Sheltering Arms MSA Outreach and Education component is focused on peer HIV/STI prevention, education and outreach work.  We train peers utilizing a harm reduction approach on how to reduce the negative effects of some things that they might be involved in like unprotected sex, drug use or sex work.Our Community Health division is seeking an individual to facilitate HIV prevention groups; connect with community organizations to recruit participants for group and other agency services; street outreach; distribution of condoms and safe sex materials; represent the MSA program at community health fairs and related events; prepare weekly and monthly reports and other duties as assigned.


Sheltering Arms is looking to hire a Outreach Worker for our Community Health Program located in Jamaica, Queens. The Outreach Worker will conduct intensive outreach, facilitate groups and provide support to the MSA program.

Essential Functions: 

  • The Outreach Worker is responsible for recruiting clients
  • Facilitating HIV/STD prevention and education groups using evidenced-based curricula to women or young people 13-24 years old
  • Connecting with other organizations to recruit participants for groups and agency services
  • Provide presentations to the community on HIV, STI’s and various health-related topics
  • Represent the MSA program at community health fairs and related events


  • High School Diploma/GED; BA Degree preferred
  • Group facilitation experience
  • Basic HIV/AIDS and STIs knowledge; experience with at risk population preferred
  • Sensitive to cultural, ethnic and gender orientation differences; ability to empathize with others and genuine interest in working with disenfranchised individuals
  • Self-motivation skills and the ability to work collaboratively
  • Strong presentation and writing skills
  • Must possess great social and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to read and write English proficiently
  • Bilingual Spanish/English
