Youth Specialist - The Door

Job Summary:

The Youth Specialist will work to refer youth who are engaged in Sheltering Arms' foster care, juvenile justice and youth services programs to The Door's Youth Opportunity Hub.  Through the Youth Opportunity Hub, The Door will provide positive youth development programs and services.  The Sheltering Arms Youth Specialist will work with Sheltering Arms staff to identify youth appropriate for referral, connect those youth to The Door, and maintain contact to ensure a warm hand-off and a smooth transition. Responsible for referring systems-involved youth to The Door for comprehensive services and ensuring a smooth transition into those services.

Essential Functions:

  • Gain familiarity with programming and staff at The Door and the new Youth Opportunities Hub Initiative
  • Educate Sheltering Arms staff about the services available for youth ages 12-24 at The Door and encourage referrals
  • Visit youth at Sheltering Arms facilities to find and engage potential participants for The Door
  • Make referrals to The Door for interested and eligible youth, including accompanying youth to The Door as appropriate
  • Facilitate communication between staff from Sheltering Arms and The Door to ensure a warm hand-off and a smooth transition for youth
  • Perform all other related tasks


  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college
  • Excellent communication, planning, organizational and multi-tasking abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Comfort traveling throughout NYC
  • Previous experience in youth services preferred
