The therapeutic component to a community-based gun violence prevention program that aims to reduce and prevent shootings through the use of public health strategies. The program is a replication of the evidence-based Cure Violence model. Provide public education and clinical support services to youth at high risk of gun violence, victims of gun violence, families of gun violence victims and to the community at large. This is a Full Time position located in Far Rockaway, Queens.  

Essential Functions

  • Conduct outreach to the community to build awareness around mental health and community violence
  • Develop and maintain a list of community resources and work collaboratively to coordinate with the Cure Violence  program
  • Assist with appropriate referrals and linkages for participants to needed mental health and substance abuse services
  • Provide access to appropriate support groups: grief, socialization, and bereavement
  • Provide training and provision of self-care/management interventions
  • Assistance with referrals to a full scope of social and survival services including housing, food assistance, educational, mentoring, and legal support
  • Work collaboratively to ensure that participants and non participants receive therapeutic services.
  • Provide mental health screenings, outreach, presentations and tabling at community events.
  • Attend all mandatory program trainings and meetings.
  • Attend and participate in weekly team meetings as required

Qualifications

  •  A Bachelor’s Degree in a mental health field required; A Master’s Degree in Social Work preferred
  •  A minimum of 3 years of social service experience, preferably in youth development or juvenile justice
  •  Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • Experience and/or training in crisis intervention desirable
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes late evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Committed to working toward positive community change

Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to complete all standard administrative and support tasks including but not limited to climbing up and down stairs, operation of computers/phones/fax/printer/copy machine, and the ability to lift boxes, furniture, and equipment up to 30lbs. Must be able to travel from the various locations and sites of Sheltering Arms.
