Shift Supervisor (Non-Secure Detention)

Sheltering Arms is seeking Shift Supervisors who will be responsible for ensuring facility’s compliance with the daily routine and structure of the facility during the shift in which he/she is on duty; responsible for maintaining agency standards of  quality care and service provision to the youth residing within the facility. Responsible for the  supervision of youth specialist, their deployment and activities and the daily orchestration of the milieu with attention to activity programming, routines, discipline, program structure, and tone. 


  • In addition to the regular duties as a youth specialist,* the shift supervisor takes on the following specific responsibilities which may vary depending upon the shift,

“Charge” Duties:

  • Remains “in charge” throughout the shift overseeing all activities of assigned youth specialists and youth throughout the shift. Functions essentially as a “general,” ensuring that required tasks are completed, maintaining law and order, and upholding high standards of care in a healthy, therapeutic context.
  • Supervision and Training:
  • Provides formal and informal supervision, including ongoing feedback and training to assigned workers.  Mediates staff/team conflict.  Completes staff evaluations as required.
  • Management:
  • Requisitioning, system maintenance and documentation as required. Submits reports to MCCU as required or necessary; assures that all log entries are completed by him/ herself or the youth specialists; develops and maintains an orderly work and living environment. Immediately reports crisis, damage or other problems to the Assistant Site Director/Site Director.
  • Leadership:
  • Helps in setting the mission, defining the issues, extracting and validating information, finding “solutions” when alternatives, information and objectives are ambiguous, deciding the best uses of time and other scarce organizational resources.


  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Successful experience as a youth specialist.
  • Familiarity with issues of child and adolescent development, professional
  • child care practice and relevant clinical issues.
  • Ability to function and communicate under pressure;
  • Familiarity with OCFS/DJJ regulations.

We currently have Part Time Weekend and Full Time PM Shifts Both located in the Bronx
